Disney Theatrical Productions is among the world’s most successful commercial theatre producers, bringing live entertainment events to a global audience of more than 20 million people a year in more than 50 countries. A division of
The Walt Disney Studios, it was formed in 1994 and operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. Its ten Broadway titles - including such long-running hits as Beauty and the Beast, Aida, Aladdin and The Lion King - have been seen by hundreds of millions of theatregoers on Broadway and around the world and have been nominated for 60 Tony Awards®, winning Broadway’s highest honor 20 times to date.
In the early 90’s, Disney signed a long-term lease on 42nd Street’s New Amsterdam Theatre, one of Broadway’s oldest and grandest theatres, but by that point thoroughly dilapidated. It took a team of more than 400 expert engineers, plasterers, painters, and technicians to return “The House Beautiful” to its original glory, opening in 1997.
